Deodorant part deux

It was official — I stunk. I loved my homemade deodorant but it didn’t love me. It worked better than anything else I was using and it didn’t contain any aluminum of any sort. It also didn’t have any parabens, preservatives or artificial fragrances — nothing. Even lacking all that, though, it left me smelling great. The only problem with it was that it irritated the hell out of my armpits. I thought that reducing the concentration of baking soda (as a total percentage) would improve things but I still found it to be gritty and, after a while, it left my armpits red and irritated.

Since the irritation began, I had switched back to using the Rock (aka Crystal deodorant) full-time, trying the Crystal deodorant in both liquid and solid forms. My brother and husband swear that the solid version works better but I feel like I’m just rubbing a wet piece of glass on my armpits with about the same results. By the early afternoon, especially after going walking in the morning after dropping the kids off at school, I smelled of B.O. The liquid Crystal worked a little better for me, keeping the stink bomb surprise until a little later so I didn’t reek until closer to dinnertime. With my homemade stuff, I didn’t stink at all. No B.O. stench. Just red, unhappy pits.

I had used the Ban Roll-On Unscented (the one that ranked a 1 out of 10 on the EWG database) once since the beginning of this project and only because I was being filmed for a television segment for the local news. These situations always make me nervous and I figured worrying about giant, wet pit stains wasn’t going to help matters much. For some reason, the week after filming the segment I had an ad pop up on my Gmail account suggesting a clinical deodorant that was supposed to really help.

Apparently Google was reading my mind. Or could smell my armpits through my laptop. I don’t know why I clicked on the link, but I was curious as to how potentially toxic a super-antiperspirant would be. I checked out the ingredients and mostly it was more of an issue with the fragrances (and potential phthalates) in it. This led me to look into the product Certain Dri Antiperspirant Roll-On, which is another clinical-strength antiperspirant. I plugged it into the EWG Cosmetic Database and was surprised to learn that it only ranked a 1, just like the unscented Ban.12 Since it contains so few ingredients, it made some sense. The only real ingredient at issue was the aluminum chloride, which is the ingredient that stops the sweating.

Since I would be doing more and more filming for a variety of projects I was working on, I made a mental note to pick up some Certain Dri for those occasions. In the meantime, I spent some time completely reworking my homemade deodorant. I made a new batch that removed all the baking soda since that seemed to be the element causing the problem.
